Registration Is Now Open for Accela Engage 2016!
I’m excited to announce that registration is now open for Accela Engage 2016, the civic tech conference that brings together more than 1,000 customers, government leaders, business partners, thought leaders and Accela staff for a week of training, networking, inspiration and fun! The conference will be held August 21-26 at the JW Marriott L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles, and attendees will have the opportunity to network, learn and build relationships with the best in the civic tech industry. We’ll have a record number of breakout sessions and training, as well as a number of networking events. Take a look at the agenda to see what’s in store. WHAT ATTENDEES HAVE TO SAY ABOUT ENGAGE “Accela Engage is a ‘must’ show because you get the most opportunity to meet with agencies, learn about the concepts and the product, and be trained in a very cost-effective way. In a short amount of...

Accela Engage 2016 Is Shaping Up to Be Bigger and Better Than Ever Before

Accela Engage 2016 Is Shaping Up to Be Bigger and Better Than Ever Before
As the team here gets ready to open up registration next week for Accela Engage, I can’t help but think back on Accela Engage conferences of years past. I first attended Engage in 2013, only about six weeks after joining the company. I was impressed by the strong sense of community among attendees and Accela staff, something I hadn’t seen to such a degree at other companies’ conferences I’ve been to. Accela Engage has grown significantly in the past several years, and now brings together more than 1,000 customers, government leaders, business partners, thought leaders and Accela staff for a week of training, networking and inspiration. We’ll be returning to Los Angeles in 2016 for an event packed with more training, more breakout sessions and more chances to learn about the latest innovations than ever before. For many, this is the one time each year they get to really focus...

Featured Customer: El Paso, Texas, Speeds Service and Centralizes Information across Multiple Departments

Featured Customer: El Paso, Texas, Speeds Service and Centralizes Information across Multiple Departments
There are so many powerful examples of local governments across the nation improving internal efficiencies while enhancing the way they deliver services to residents at the same time. The City of El Paso, Texas, demonstrates how governments can take advantage of the Accela Civic Platform across multiple departments to improve efficiencies and get everyone on the same page. In El Paso, more than 26 municipal departments were struggling with manual, paper-laden processes. Slow response times to citizen requests and complaints, delayed permit and license applications and approvals, and backlogged caseloads were just the beginning. The Environmental Services Department (ESD) was in the process of implementing the Accela Civic Platform, which was catching the attention of other departments. It soon became the main solution that would help address many of the City’s operational challenges and position it as a service and technology leader. Now, the City has traded the chaos of...

It’s hard to believe it’s been just over 10 years since Hurricane Katrina hit, displacing more than a million people throughout the Gulf Coast region. Roughly 80 percent of the City of New Orleans was flooded, with 70 percent of all occupied housing units damaged during the hurricane and flooding that followed. Parts of the City remained underwater for eight days until repairs to the levee system made it possible for water to start being pumped out. I was living in Atlanta at the time and heard about the unprecedented devastation on the news. Little did I know that years later I would move across the country and join a company that was instrumental in the City of New Orleans’ efforts to get back on its feet and rebuild. Coincidentally, about a year before Hurricane Katrina, the City’s Department of Safety and Permits implemented Accela Land Management to automate its...

Accela Engage Is Next Week!

Accela Engage Is Next Week!
b2ap3_thumbnail_karla-wong-engage-2015.jpg
It’s hard to believe Accela Engage 2015 is almost here! Many of us here at Accela have been working hard for months to make sure this is a great event. From planning the presentations, sessions and training to the event logistics and fun activities (like Paramount Studios Monday night for our Customer Appreciation Dinner!), the office has been a whirlwind of activity. To lighten things up a bit, we recently had a “guess how many pins are in a jar” contest, and the winner is the woman whose team is responsible for much of the design work you’ll see at Engage – be sure to tell her what an amazing job they did when you see her in LA! I’d also like to give a huge shout-out to master event planner Candice Nepomuceno, who is the wizard behind the curtain for this year’s conference. Our multi-talented Creative Director Karla Wong...

Bringing the Ten Faces of Innovation to Accela

Bringing the Ten Faces of Innovation to Accela

It’s an exciting time to be a part of the Accela family! As a member of Accela’s Product Management team, which is responsible for product vision and planning, I need to understand what is important to government agencies. The team looks for ways to ensure our customers’ goals are met across all of our solution offerings. Pulling from different areas in and outside the company helps us accomplish this, which is why I attended IDEO’s Ten Faces of Innovation seminar led by coauthor Jonathan Littman.

The seminar brought people from Pandora, UCSF, Walmart, Cisco and, of course, Accela – a great group with varying expertise and backgrounds. I was excited to attend the seminar because it focused on using strategies to spark innovation within organizations, and it did not disappoint. The day consisted of lectures and several exciting group activities that pushed us to produce under pressure.
