It was a whirlwind week at Accela Engage in Los Angeles last month, with over 800 customers, partners, developers, thought leaders and Accela staff coming together for inspirational keynotes, presentations, sharing of best practices, networking, over 60 sessions to choose from and hands-on training. After a productive first day, during which we announced the 2015 Accela Civic App Challenge winners , we rolled out the red carpet for our customers at Paramount Studios. We held our Customer Appreciation Dinner in the New York Streets Backlot, bringing a little of my hometown to LA (go, Mets!). I was honored to join Maury this year to announce our annual customer award winners — agencies that are using technology to improve efficiencies and enhance collaboration both within agencies and with their citizens. And what better place to hand out awards than surrounded by a little Hollywood glamour? We were also delighted to have Julia Burrows...

Startup in a Day: Have You Accepted the Challenge?

Startup in a Day: Have You Accepted the Challenge?
startup-quote.jpg
Earlier this week, we hosted a webinar on the national Startup in a Day initiative . The White House is working with the National League of Cities, and has challenged governments across the country to reduce the new business licensing and permitting process to less than a day. As of last week, 71 cities and Native American reservations have taken up the challenge. I was joined by Clarence Anthony, Executive Director of the National League of Cities and former mayor of South Bay, Florida, and Peter Koht, who previously focused on small business support with the Economic Development Department in Santa Cruz, California, which inspired him to cofound OpenCounter . We’ve teamed up with OpenCounter to offer a solution that meets the needs of this national call to arms by making it easier for cities of all sizes to support new businesses. In fact, the City of Palo Alto launched...

Bringing a New Era of Citizen Engagement to the Big Apple

Bringing a New Era of Citizen Engagement to the Big Apple

New York is a hub for civic technology and open government initiatives. With one of the most detailed open data policies and the newly launched Civic Hall center for civic innovators, the City is on the forefront of true civic engagement – applying technology to better serve citizens. This past Wednesday we held a gathering for civic-minded developers, government officials, influencers and media at the historic Fraunces Tavern in New York to celebrate the civic technology boom in the city. The Tavern boasts a rich history as the setting for George Washington’s famed farewell to his officers in 1783. It served as the perfect backdrop to talk about changes in government and how open data and automated services can improve relationships between agencies and the citizens they serve every day. We kicked off the event with comments from New York City Council Member Ben Kallos on the critical role of...

New Request For Proposals Wizard: Simplifying Your RFP Process

New Request For Proposals Wizard: Simplifying Your RFP Process

Selecting the right software that works for your agency is a daunting task. Request for Proposal (RFP) documents can be complicated and it’s easy to overlook a specification or goal in the process. Small to medium-sized agencies, especially with constrained budgets, often leverage RFPs created by other agencies in order to create their own. It’s common to copy RFP documents of much larger agencies that have intensive, tailored solution requirements that may not match the smaller agency’s true goals. This often results in vendors struggling to respond and quote excessive functionality that the smaller agencies do not need.

This is where the Request For Proposals Wizard comes in – giving you the freedom to create a custom RFP specific to your agency’s needs.

When Abraham Lincoln spoke the phrase, “government of the people, by the people, for the people,” he envisioned a government that existed to better serve its own constituents—one that was open to change and innovation, and would better the lives of every citizen. Although it’s easy to get caught up in the wave of cynicism that’s so popular these days, there are government agencies around the world that consider improving the lives of constituents a top priority, and are creating new and innovative technologies that embrace that populist ideal by making it easier for citizens to engage with their governments. The Accela Engage Customer Awards were created to honor agencies that are using technology to build better communities by providing online and mobile services, which streamlines processes and enhances collaboration. This year, Accela recognized nine government agencies with awards in a variety of categories. 2014 winners include: Mobility Award: Baltimore...
