Town of Brookhaven Taps Accela to Automate Building and Fire Prevention

Long Island town of 500,000 is NY State’s largest by area

BROOKHAVEN, N.Y., April 13, 2012 – Accela, Inc. today announced that the Town of Brookhaven, New York, has chosen Accela Automation® web software to help its Department of Building and Fire Prevention operate more efficiently, reducing the time it takes to issue building permits and manage inspections for more than 500,000 residents.

New York’s largest town by physical area, the Town of Brookhaven covers more than 500 square miles of land and water around Long Island, and is home to Stony Brook University and the Brookhaven National Laboratory. The town expects to deploy Accela’s land management application in early 2013, giving the Division of Building new tools to process building permits and certificates of occupancy more quickly, and leveraging the Internet to streamline communications between departments. The solution also will help the Division of Fire Prevention manage and share information about building safety inspections, as well as mitigate, investigate and coordinate with other agencies around hazardous materials incidents.

“Accela is always pleased to help local governments boost their efficiency,” said Maury Blackman, CEO and President of Accela. “Providing these services with fewer resources means they can more easily meet their service delivery goals and help ensure the safety of half a million residents in the New York metropolitan area.”

The new system will replace an existing solution based on earlier Accela technology, the Accela ‘PERMITS’ Plus® client-server software, and will help the town modernize its IT capabilities to keep pace with future growth. Accela partner Kings Canyon Technology is assisting with configuration, testing and deployment of Brookhaven’s implementation of Accela Automation.
