Guest Blog from Buildingeye | Referendum for a Dream: Why Data Standardization Is the Next Evolution for U.S. Cities

b2ap3_thumbnail_open-data-movement.jpg
The private sector has always led the race in technological advancement, usually leaving government agencies and city municipalities decades in the past. However, one of the few places where government entities have been pressed forward in this area is for defense applications. Yet collaborative technology partnerships continue to move forward—and even in the past few years, we’ve seen how companies like Accela and governments have been working together in mitigating disasters. Appallicious has a disaster assessment dashboard to help citizens in disaster situations and are working directly with FEMA. DigitalGlobe was recently able to help the U.S. military move their assets in place during the massive flooding in Colorado and even the California wildfires this past year.Through such a powerful partnership, the U.S. military was able to save countless lives, and these scenarios also taught a very important lesson: the data needs to flow, because populations depend on it. How...

Guest Blog from CitySourced | The Value of the Accela Civic Platform for Government Agencies

At the Accela Engage User Conference in San Diego, many of us heard Accela software referred to as the “Civic Platform.” What does it really mean to be a software platform? For us at CitySourced , as a strategic development partner for Accela, we believe the platform provides the back-office foundation on which our solution can thrive. We’ve created a citizen engagement platform that serves as a municipality’s “mobile City Hall.” Through our solution, a resident can get easy access to such services as reporting a pothole (asset management), submitting overgrown brush (fire code enforcement), purchasing a fishing or pet license (licensing) or paying a parking ticket (finance). Our audience is your organization’s public-facing community, and our development strategy is a mobile-first, responsive approach. What that all means is that we don’t personally want to build the code enforcement system or the licensing system. However, without these important underlying systems...

Guest Blog from Appallicious: The Case for Comprehensive Open Data Legislation

On October 17, 1989, the Loma Prieta earthquake struck the San Francisco Bay Area, killing 63 people and injuring nearly 4,000 residents. The quake also caused an estimated $6 billion in damage and displaced over 12,000 people. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the earthquake, and though we don’t know for sure when the next “big one” will hit, we now have access to resources and tools to better prepare and recover from disasters like these. At the White House last week, Appallicious unveiled one of these new tools during a disaster technology event -- the Disaster Assessment and Assistance Dashboard, or DAAD . This new online tool creates a “shareable economy” to aid in economic stability post-disaster. DAAD utilizes open data to assess community resiliency and promote pre-disaster preparedness, allowing for more resilient economic recovery in the wake of a disaster by creating a more robust and locally...

Partners in Civic Good

b2ap3_thumbnail_PDC-2014-high-speed-networking.jpg
The 2014 Accela Partner and Developer Conference was a great success. Our partners arrived expecting to learn how to increase their revenues building, selling and delivering Civic Platform solutions while providing civic good, and we did not let them down. As our company has grown, so has our channel. What started a decade ago as a small group of companies implementing our software has grown into a vibrant ecosystem across segments of sales, delivery, alliance and development, all actively enjoying success as Accela partners. With a focus on business, the Accela Partner and Developer Conference agenda was packed, including sessions on the details of our partner program, growing your business with Accela, uncovering new opportunities for revenue, understanding the competitive landscape, seeing the new best practice templates, many roundtables and breakouts, and two very well received sessions where our partners shared their stories and Accela introduced an industry game changer....

Finding Our True North: Bringing Customers, Partners and Developers Together at PDC 2014

We just wrapped our ninth annual Partner and Developer Conference , and across the organization folks are pretty jazzed. We headed north to Tahoe, and while the weather was overcast and rainy for the bulk of the event, we all gained a lot of perspective from speakers and attendees alike on our collective purpose and potential to bridge the very disparate and disconnected worlds in which our government customers and their customers & citizens live and work We spent time with partners new and old, and the consistent feedback was positive. As we opened the General Session, I asked how many audience members (both partners and Accela employees) were attending for the first time. I’d guess the number to be between 30-40% of the audience, and that’s a fantastic leading indicator for our ecosystem expansion and success in partnering efforts across the organization Our President and CEO, Maury Blackman ,...
