| The Challenge
For many years, the Jackson County Public Works Department had no
pavement management system in place to provide information about
the County’s roadways. Instead, the Department took the approach
of “worst first” for allocating its resources for road
maintenance and repair.
The Solution
The County began using a pavement management system that tracks
and manages the condition of all of the roads in an agency’s
jurisdiction, including seven different pavement types for both
low and high-volume roads. The County also implemented a performance
modeling system which utilizes analysis tools to help agencies develop
short and long-term preventative maintenance plans for up to ten
years.
The Bottom Line
Since implementing the system, the Public Works Department has seen
remarkable improvements in its road maintenance program. The Department
estimates that it saves more than $1 million each year because it
applies the correct maintenance actions at the right time.
