Less than two months ago, all signs pointed to a safe reopening of businesses, government, and other public places in North America following eight weeks of restrictions. I recall a real sense of urgency, even as Accela prioritized and published our playbook. You see, while ample guidance documentation existed for restaurants, barber shops, and traditional offices to reopen with safe accommodations, we found nothing guiding the considerations for the reopening of state and local governments.  Leap forward to July and we can see a reluctant rush to reverse or slow the course of reopening in light of rising infection rates. This situation is amplified and distorted by daily political posturing,… Continue reading

The following blog was originally posted on the National League of Cities’ CitiesSpeak blog.   Countless written guides exist for re-opening a restaurant, furniture store, salon or gym. These guides are essential aids to the businesspeople who might not otherwise know how to prevent COVID-19 spread. We want these businesses open – albeit safely – to refuel our local economies. However, there is very little guidance offered to local and state government departments on how to navigate the process of reopening the business of government, many with inspectors in the field and traditional public lobbies and counters for asking questions, making payments, and settling important business interactively…. The pandemic is not only driving a reimagining of government services and what it means to be a government employee, it is also providing a glimpse of the future many of us thought was much farther off. While government agencies have been adjusting to the soaring expectations of today’s always-on, connected consumers for several years, the past few months have shown how quickly citizen expectations can change for government agencies, and the impact digital technologies can have on an agency’s ability to meet increasing demands…. The COVID-19 outbreak has dealt a shock to the local governments responsible for managing their community’s response. But if a silver lining were possible in all this, it is certainly how individuals, organizations, and companies have risen to the moment and rallied around innovative solutions, technologies, and partnerships to address some of our most pressing civic challenges. At Accela, our teams have aligned even more closely with our agency customers worldwide as we navigate this new reality. Whether it is using our tools to conduct business online, provide mobile or video inspection capabilities for field workers, or enable a remote workforce, agencies continue to impress with their ability to go the extra mile to keep their communities safe…. The following article was originally posted on the National League of Cities’ CitiesSpeak blog on April 29, 2020. As local officials across the country respond to the novel coronavirus, many are realizing there is a unique opportunity to rethink what the new normal should be. More importantly, how might it be better than where we’ve come from. I have already seen examples of great efforts emerging like the one from NLC to ensure that local governments of all sizes have the financial support they need that give me hope for a brighter future. I believe there are two positives that will come from this time we are experiencing now…. Continue reading
