Making governments great again. One humble permit and license at a time.

Heidi Lorenzen
I joined Accela this past Fall to help state and local governments work better for their citizens. I’m convinced that by improving everyday interactions between communities and their governments we can improve society as a whole. This was a natural career progression. Prior to Accela, I headed up marketing at Singularity University, a unique organization that helps executives and entrepreneurs understand and address the exponential rate of technological change to create a better future for humanity. I witnessed first-hand how hard it is for the private sector, let alone governments, to adapt. That’s why I answered the call about the opportunity at Accela, the technology leader modernizing governments so communities can thrive!… Continue reading

Reflecting Back to Push Forward Faster

Ed Daihl
As we begin 2018, there is much to learn from the past year’s developments in emerging industries. On-demand rideshare companies are expanding across the globe while grappling with how best to define the industry and the individuals working in it. Short-term rental organizations such as Airbnb, Homeaway and others are simultaneously cited as the source of rising housing costs and also the solution to squeezed family budgets, all while regulators are working to find a path forward. The cannabis industry, and related delivery services, are moving into the mainstream as governments are building the systems to manage a new segment of the economy. Behind these emerging technologies is the humble government permit and regulatory process…. Continue reading

Conference Roundup: Accela at the NEHA 2017 AEC

Kelly Delaney
Another fantastic NEHA 2017 AEC is in the bag! The Accela Environmental Health team recently returned from the National Environmental Health Association’s Annual Education Conference in Grand Rapids, Michigan. As in years past, it was again a pleasure to greet familiar faces and see where the environmental health sector is going (and meet the new, bright minds leading the way!). The NEHA AEC is always a busy place – we typically divide our time at the event talking about Accela Environmental Health in the booth, serving as panel moderators, and presenting classes. This year, myself and my colleague Darryl Booth both led sessions, and Darryl was also a panelist in a well-attended session discussing Environmental Health Tracking and Informatics…. Using Accela To Meet Department Needs And Save Money

Scott Connors
Guest Blog from City of Pittsfield, Massachusetts Recently our Building Maintenance Department informed us of the upcoming license renewal for their internal work order system for the City of Pittsfield. This system was used to report a building issue to the Building Maintenance department, and also housed all of their preventive maintenance calls. Upon further investigation, we learned the cost for renewing the license and bringing the application up to date would be a staggering $42,000. Accela to the rescue A search was conducted to find a less expensive suitable replacement. During the search process, I realized we had a product in our arsenal which could do the job…. Can tech and government get along?

Tim Woodbury
This article was originally posted on Bloomberg Government. Bloomberg Government regularly publishes insights, opinions and best practices from our community of senior leaders and decision makers. In less than a decade, Uber and Lyft have upended the taxi industry; Airbnb has turned people’s homes into an attractive alternative to hotels; and drones are circling our skies in record numbers. These are just a few of the many technology-driven innovations promising to improve our lives and making the hearts of investors flutter…. Continue reading
