Atlanta Delivers e-Government Efficiency with Launch of Accela Automation

New Online Permitting System Brings Immediate Benefits to One of Nation’s Most Dynamic Economic Centers

ATLANTA, Dec. 11, 2009 – Accela, Inc. today announced that the City of Atlanta has launched a new Web-based workflow management system, powered by Accela Automation® software, and has already seen a strong impact on the operations of important city departments. Only one week after the system’s Nov. 30 debut, Atlanta’s departments of Building, Code Enforcement, Housing, and Planning had processed more than 650 requests, applications and permits via the Internet – with roughly 400 of those in the Building department alone.

Accela Automation is a Web-based enterprise application that facilitates more citizen-centric, performance-based government by automating the most critical regulatory functions and by connecting disparate systems and departments to information residing in a central database. Accela Automation includes modules for permitting, licensing, asset management and more, across a range of city functions.

The launch of these on-line services has been an important step in Atlanta’s goal to provide increased public access to many of its Building and Planning activities and to boost overall efficiency. With the new system in place, Atlanta residents and business owners can now use the city’s web portal to apply and pay for permits, schedule inspections, check the status of their requests, or print an approved permit directly from the Internet. Field-based staff will also benefit from the Accela Wireless™ add-on solution: code inspection updates instantaneous and more accurate; city inspectors can conduct more inspections without having to return to the office for data entry; and new wireless printers will allow code enforcement officers to print citations and notices of violations in their vehicles.

Atlanta’s use of additional Accela applications will facilitate the management of citizen requests and the sharing of GIS information from a centralized database. Accela Citizen Access™ provides the public with transparent, 24/7 online access to the permitting process and the status of their applications, while Accela GIS™ delivers geographic representations of all land-use, zoning, and infrastructure information associated with a parcel, permit, inspection or plan.

“For many years now, Atlanta has been one of the nation’s fastest-growing and most dynamic economic centers,” said Maury Blackman, CEO and President of Accela. “Cities like Atlanta need to accommodate ongoing growth by serving residents and businesses with innovative tools that help government work better. Atlanta continues to demonstrate that it knows how to get the job done.”
