Herfie is Back and Springbrook is Standing Tall

Herfie is Back and Springbrook is Standing Tall By: Max Schnoedl This week, we shared some exciting news  with the local government financial community – we’re bringing Springbrook back, along with its beloved mascot, Herfie the cow. We believe that our 900 local government customers, together with many more of their peers across the US, should benefit from a modern, high-performance cloud offering to manage their finances, payroll and utility billing efficiently from coast to coast. We also believe in citizen-centric government, where communities are empowered by added financial transparency and can offer a seamless payment experience to their constituencies, in line with what they might expect from their everyday interactions with leading consumer brands. Having had the pleasure of working with our talented team at Springbrook for years, I am thrilled to now help implement new initiatives to engage more intimately with our customers, and invest to grow further...

Expanding Cannabis Policy and Platforms to Support a Growing Industry

The last several election cycles have demonstrated quite a shift in American politics, particularly when it comes to cannabis regulation. Voters in 29 states have legalized medical cannabis, and nine of those states have legalized recreational cannabis use for adults as well. There has been plenty of activity at the federal level, which sometimes conflicts with state and local actions. The most recent spending bill keeps federal protection prohibiting Congress from using federal funds to prevent states from developing their own marijuana markets.                   State and local governments considering their regulatory approach should note that—although still something of a gray area—the law may be evolving in order to support taxation and reinforce programs of public safety, ethical business ownership and fair competition. A Coordinated Approach to Cannabis Regulation   There are variations in how this may be done—we typically see an integrated, multi-departmental process involving inspection and permitting by such agencies...

Tailoring Our Solutions to Address Increasingly Complex Government Challenges

Accela creates software for state, county and municipal governments to streamline interactions with citizens by meeting them where they are, which is increasingly online. When I joined the company last year, my first priority was to listen to our customers and understand their needs. In my conversations, it was clear that local and state governments are experiencing a tough time navigating new innovations and industries driven by regulatory and technological change. We’ve taken two steps to enhance the success of our customers. Simplifying deployment of our solutions Last Wednesday, Accela announced the availability of turnkey licensing and regulatory products for cannabis and short-term rentals (i.e. Airbnb, VRBO and HomeAway). The Accela Civic Application for Cannabis Regulation and the Accela Civic Application for Short-Term Rental Registration are the first product offerings in Accela’s new Civic Applications suite that will provide governments customizable, easy-to-implement solutions that solve new and evolving regulatory challenges....

Making governments great again. One humble permit and license at a time.

I joined Accela this past Fall to help state and local governments work better for their citizens. I’m convinced that by improving everyday interactions between communities and their governments we can improve society as a whole. This was a natural career progression. Prior to Accela, I headed up marketing at Singularity University, a unique organization that helps executives and entrepreneurs understand and address the exponential rate of technological change to create a better future for humanity. I witnessed first-hand how hard it is for the private sector, let alone governments, to adapt. That’s why I answered the call about the opportunity at Accela, the technology leader modernizing governments so communities can thrive! Now four months into my role leading marketing here, I’m focused on raising awareness and understanding of Accela’s track record in, and solutions for, helping governments work better through technological progress. Unlike private sector companies which deliver goods...

Reflecting Back to Push Forward Faster

As we begin 2018, there is much to learn from the past year’s developments in emerging industries. On-demand rideshare companies are expanding across the globe while grappling with how best to define the industry and the individuals working in it. Short-term rental organizations such as Airbnb, Homeaway and others are simultaneously cited as the source of rising housing costs and also the solution to squeezed family budgets, all while regulators are working to find a path forward. The cannabis industry, and related delivery services, are moving into the mainstream as governments are building the systems to manage a new segment of the economy. Behind these emerging technologies is the humble government permit and regulatory process. But, when it comes to moving local, state, and national economies and innovation forward, some governments are better positioned than others. The Role Accela Plays As the leading provider of permitting and regulatory solutions, Accela...

Driven to Accela-rate governments at City Summit

Accela is a proud supporter of the National League of Cities and its annual conference, City Summit . At this year’s conference in Charlotte, NC, held November 15-18, Accela is excited to again connect with civic leaders from across the country. We’re sending an all-star “Pit Crew” of Accela Gov’t Tech experts and we’ve got a little “High Speed” fun planned as well! We’re looking forward to sharing the latest government technology solutions designed to drive productivity and citizen engagement. Now more than ever, the old methods of providing government services via paper-based processes and waiting in queues aren’t sustainable. Emerging regulatory issues, such as short-term rental and marijuana regulation, are top of mind for many city leaders and placing new burdens on city departments. At Accela, we take great pride in working alongside our customers to meet these new challenges, and we love coming to NLC’s City Summit to...
